The Ribhu Gita is a classic work of Advaita (non-dual) Vedanta. It’s Sanskrit title translate as The Song of Sage Ribhu. This Indian treasure is a section of the Sanskrit epic Shiva Rahasya Purāna, The Secret Teaching of Shiva. The mythic story that is told about this text claims Sage Ribhu received this teaching in Mount Kailasa directly from Lord Shiva, and then Ribhu passed them on to his student Nidāgha. In the span of about two thousand verses, it recounts the dialogue between Sage Ribhu and Sage Nidagha concerning the Self (atma) and the Absolute (brahman).
The Ribhu Gita is characterized by an unswerving focus upon one teaching only, that of the Self, expressed in one of the mahavakyas (great sayings) from the Chandogya Upanishads: “Tat Tvam Asi,” or “You are That”. It is a lucid exposition and summary of the universal nature of an awakened heart and mind.
The great Indian teacher Ramana Maharshi (1897-1950) referred to it constantly, and taught and encouraged others to repeatedly read the 26th chapter. The readings selected for this morning’s contemplation are from the 26th chapter of the Ribhu Gita.
