The Yoga of Understanding
sāmkhya-yoga
But if you will not engage in this righteous battle,
Then having forsaken your own particular dharma as well as glory,
You will incur sin.
atha cet tvam imam dharmyam
now if thou this proper
samgrāmam na kariṣyasi
engagement not thou shalt undertake
tataḥ svadharmam kīrtimca
thereupon, own duty and glory
hitvā pāpam avāpsyasi
having avoided, evil thou shalt incur.
Now, if you will not undertake
This righteous war,
Thereupon, having avoided your own
duty and glory,
You shall incur evil.
At the thick-haired Arjuna’s command, the bristling-haired Krishna brought the principal chariot to a stop between the two armies— in front of Bhishma, Drona, and all of these sovereigns of the world.

the other great kings, he said:
“Look, Arjuna. From here you can see
all the Kurus who are gathered to do battle.
At Guḍākeśa’s words, O Bhārata, Hṛṣīkeśa stationed the fine chariot between the two armies, before Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the kings, and he said to the Pārtha, “Behold the Kurus assembled!”

“Arjuna, behold all the Kurus gathered together.”

ced, if.
tvam (nom. sg.), thou.
imam (m. acc. sg.), this.
dharmyam (m. acc. sg.), proper, lawful, dutiful.
samgrāmam (m. acc. sg.), assembly, army, combat, fight, engagement.
na, not.
kariṣyasi (2nd sg. fut. act. √kṛ), thou shalt undertake, thou shalt do, make, etc.
tatas, then, thereupon.
svadharmam (m. acc. sg.), own duty.
kīrtim (f. acc. sg.), glory, fame.
ca, and.
hitvā (gerund √hā), having avoided, having left.
pāpam (n. acc. sg.), evil, sin.
avāpsyasi (2nd sg. fut. act. ava √āp), thou shalt attain, thou shalt incur.
