The Yoga of Arjuna’s Crisis
arjuna-visāda-yoga
Why is it not wise for us, O Janārdana (Krsna),
Who see this evil of causing the destruction of a family,
To hold back from this sin?
katham na jñeyam asmābhiḥ
how not to be known by us
pāpād asmān nivartitum
from evil from this to turn back
kulakṣayakṛtam doṣam
the destruction-of-family-caused evil,
prapaśyadbhir janārdana
by discernment, Agitator of Men?
Why should we not know enough
To turn back from this evil,
Through discernment of the wrong caused
By the destruction of the family, O Krishna?
how can we fail to fathom our own need to turn from such a crime, not seeing the evil of destroying family? O Fomenter of the People!
Facing Bhishma, Drona, and
the other great kings, he said:
“Look, Arjuna. From here you can see
all the Kurus who are gathered to do battle.
At Guḍākeśa’s words, O Bhārata, Hṛṣīkeśa stationed the fine chariot between the two armies, before Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the kings, and he said to the Pārtha, “Behold the Kurus assembled!”

and all the kings of the earth, said:
“Arjuna, behold all the Kurus gathered together.”
katham (interrog.), how?
na, not.
jñeyam (gerundive √jñā), to be known, to be understood.
asmābhis (m. inst. pl.), by us, with us.
pāpāt (n. abl. sg.), from evil, from wrong.
asmāt (n. abl. sg.),from this.
nivartitum (infinitive ni √vṛt), to tum back.
kula (n.), family.
kṣaya (m. noun from -Jksi), destruction.
kṛtam (m. acc. sg. p. pass. participle -√kṛ), doing, making, done, made, caused.
(kula-kṣaya-kṛtam, m. acc. sg. TP cpd., caused destruction of family.)
doṣam (m. acc. sg.), evil, wrong.
prapaśyadbhis (m. inst. pI. pr. participle pra √paś), by discerning, by discernment.
janārdana (m. voc. sg.), Agitator of Men, Mover of Men, epithet of Vishnu-Krishna.
