The Yoga of Arjuna’s Crisis
arjuna-visāda-yoga
What pleasure would there be for us
In slaying Dhrtarāstra’s sons,
O Janārdana (Krsna), Exciter-of-Men?
Only evil would attach to us i
If we slayed these (our would be) murderers.
nihatya dhṛtarāṣṭran naḥ
striking down the Sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra to us
kā prftiḥ syāt janārdana
what joy should it be, O Agitator of Men?
pāpam evāsrayet asmān
evil thus should cling to us
hatvāitānān ātatāyinaḥ
having killed these aggressors.
What joy would it be for us
To strike down the sons of Dhritarashtra, 0 Krishna?
Evil thus would cling to us,
Having killed these aggressors .
What satisfaction would there be, Fomenter of the People, after we’ve killed the sons of Dhrtarashtra?
Facing Bhishma, Drona, and
the other great kings, he said:
“Look, Arjuna. From here you can see
all the Kurus who are gathered to do battle.
At Guḍākeśa’s words, O Bhārata, Hṛṣīkeśa stationed the fine chariot between the two armies, before Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the kings, and he said to the Pārtha, “Behold the Kurus assembled!”

and all the kings of the earth, said:
“Arjuna, behold all the Kurus gathered together.”
nihatya (gerund ni √han), striking down, killing.
dhṛtarāṣṭran (m. acc. pl.), the Sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

prītis (f. nom. sg.), joy, pleasure.
syāt (3rd sg. optative act. √as), it should be, might it be.
janārdana (m. voc. sg.), Agitator of Men, frequent epithet of Krishna (from jana, man; √ard, agitate, torment, move).
pāpam (n. nom. sg.), evil, harm, trouble.
eva, thus, even so.
āsrayet (3rd sg. optative act. ā √śri), it should
cling to, it should lean on, take hold of.
