The Yoga of Arjuna’s Crisis
arjuna-visāda-yoga
Our force, however, commanded by Bhīsma,
Appears to be unlimited
While theirs, commanded by Bhīsma, appears to be small.
aparyāptam tad asmākam
insufficient this of ours
balam Bhīṣmābhirakṣitam
(the) force (by) Bhīṣma guarded;
paryāptam tu idam eteṣam
sufficient though that of these
balam abhirakṣitam
(the) force (by) Bhima guarded.
Their army is no match for us, the one that Bhima protects, but ours protected by Bhishma will match them.
One man loves you with pure
devotion; another man loves
the Unmanifest. Which of these two
understands yoga more deeply?
Who are the foremost adepts of yoga; those who attend on you with the devotion they constantly practice, or those who seek out the imperishable that is unmanifest?
Of those steadfast devotees who love
you and those who seek you as the
eternal formless Reality, who are the
more established in yoga?
aparyāptam (m. nom. sg. p. pass. participle a pari √āp), incomplete, insufficient, unlimited, unbounded, unequal.

balam (n. nom. sg.), strength, force.
